Thousands of supporters gathered Sunday at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens for the “New York Is Not For Sale” rally, where Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani called for sweeping reforms to make the city more affordable for working-class residents.
Flanked by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani denounced what he described as the influence of “billionaires and oligarchs” over city politics. He pledged to freeze rent increases on roughly 1 million regulated apartments, hire thousands of new teachers, and expand affordable housing and universal childcare programs.
Sanders, speaking to the rally, urged New Yorkers to unite behind Mamdani’s campaign, calling it “a fight for the soul of the working class.” Ocasio Cortez praised Mamdani as “a candidate who actually listens to his constituents and acts for them.”
Mamdani’s campaign said the rally marked a turning point in the race, framing it as a movement to reclaim the city from corporate interests. “This movement is yours,” his campaign said in a statement. “And it always will be.”
